Since February 2021 people in Myanmar are resisting the military junta. Among them are our comrades of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM). Following the coup by the military labour union activities were criminalized and their organizations declared illegal. FGWM union activists had to react. Some continue their activities from the underground, others are on the run from the military, some are in prison and others joined the People’s Defence Forces (PDF) in the jungle.
The ICL has been in touch with the FGWM for the past few years and also supported some of their labour struggles of garment workers before the coup.
In January the ICL and FGWM decided to initiated a fundraising together, aiming to collect 10 000 Euro.
Two months later we are happy to announce that we received a total sum of 14 285 Euro! That’s a huge help for comrades in Myanmar and an expression of practical international solidarity.
We thank all those who helped to make this effort successful!
On March 11th people of the ICL working group Asia and FGWM met to coordinate the next steps. The FGWM finance committee consisting of 5 members will decide on a case by case basis how the money is spent on the ground.
For now the support of imprisoned FGWM members and the coordination of safe-houses for those in the underground is being prioritized. The FGWM will keep us updated on how the fund will be used in the future.
